When the generator voltage rises to 13.2-14.3 V, the regulator armature begins to vibrate, opening and closing the upper contacts. An additional resistor is switched on and off in the excitation winding circuit of the generator. This is the 1st stage of regulation.
With a further increase in the generator voltage (with increasing rotor speed) the lower pair of contacts begins to close and open. This is the 2nd stage of regulation. When the lower contacts are closed, both ends of the excitation winding are closed to ground and it is de-energized.
