Assembling the starter (VAZ-21011)

1. Before assembly, lubricate the helical splines of the anchor shaft and the overrunning clutch hub, the gear and the cover bushings with engine oil. Lubricate the drive ring with Litol-24 consistent grease.

2. Before assembly, check the axial free play of the anchor shaft by first assembling the covers, housing and anchor and tightening the tie rod nuts. In this case, the anchor may be without a drive, and the front cover - without a lever.

3. The axial free play of the armature shaft in the ST-221 starter must be within the limits

0.07–0.7 mm. The change in the value of free travel is achieved by selecting the number or thickness of adjusting washers 22 (see Fig. Starter parts), located at the front end of the anchor shaft.

4. For starter 35.3708, the axial free play of the anchor shaft should be no more than 0.5 mm. It is adjusted by selecting the thickness of the adjusting washer 5 (see Fig. Starter Rear Parts 35.3708), located between the anchor shaft lock washer and the cover on the collector side.

5. Having selected the adjusting washers, proceed to assembly, which is performed in the reverse order of disassembly.

6. For the ST-221 starter, place the insulating plastic tubes on the tie rods, and for the 35.3708 starter, place the insulating plastic tube on the tie bolt that passes under the stator service coil busbar.

7. After assembly, check the starter on the stand.
