Tensioning device (located under the bottom of the car above the 1st stage muffler): 1 - equalizer; 2 - traction; 3 - adjusting nut; 4 - cables; 5 - lock nut.

You will need: Two 13 mm keys.

Before starting work, adjust the gaps between the shoes and the brake drum (see subsection 3.34).

Warning: On vehicles produced since 1995, the design of the parking brake lever has been changed (the first tooth of the sector is made double).

The parking brake must hold the vehicle on a 25% slope. On vehicles manufactured since 1995, the parking brake lever may be moved 2-8 clicks, and on vehicles manufactured before 1995, 4-7 clicks.

If the lever rises more than 8 clicks when the vehicle is braked with the parking brake (7 clicks for cars produced before 1995.), the car will not hold on the slope. If the lever stroke is less than 2 clicks (4 clicks for cars produced before 1995.), partial wheel locking is possible while the vehicle is moving. In both cases, the parking brake must be adjusted.

Recommendations:
  • To pre-check the parking brake, park the vehicle on a level surface. Fully raise the parking brake lever and set the gearshift lever to neutral. Get out of the vehicle and try to move it. If you succeed, the parking brake needs to be adjusted.
  • If the parking brake cable cannot be tightened during adjustment, it must be replaced.

Before adjusting the parking brake, check the condition of the drive cables. If, when pressing on the cable, you feel that it does not move in the casing, then the cable is "soured". In this case, the adjustment will not lead to a positive result. To eliminate the defect, contact specialists.
