The cars are equipped with a 4-cylinder carburetor engine with an in-line vertical arrangement of cylinders and an overhead camshaft (see fig. Longitudinal and cross section of the engine). Depending on the model or modification of the car, three types of engines can be installed:
- 2101 - with a working volume of 1.2 liters. This is the engine of VAZ-2101 cars;
- 21011 - with a working volume of 1.3 liters. The main engine for cars VAZ-21011. It differs from the 2101 engines by an increased cylinder diameter of up to 79 mm, therefore it has a different cylinder block, cylinder head gasket and pistons with piston rings;
- 2103 - with a working volume of 1.45 liters. It is used on VAZ-21023 cars. It differs from the 2101 engines by a piston stroke increased by 14 mm. Therefore, it has a different crankshaft and other parts of the timing chain drive. In addition, a carburetor with other calibration data is installed on it, designed for engines with a displacement of 1.45 liters.
This section describes the repair of the 2101 engine subsection 13.1.2.1 and subsection 13.4.
The engine assembly with clutch and gearbox is mounted on the car on three elastic supports (see fig. Engine Mount). The supports perceive both the mass of the engine and the loads arising from the vibration of the engine, from the inertia of the engine when starting the car from a standstill, accelerating and braking. With two front supports, the engine is attached to the cross member of the front suspension of the car, and the rear - to the cross member of the rear engine suspension.
