Dry type air filter with replaceable filter element. The filter housing is mounted on four carburetor studs with self-locking nuts and sealed with a rubber gasket.
The filter consists of a body, a cover 5, a filter element 13, a cold air inlet 2 and a warm air inlet 21 with a corrugated hose 16. The body and cover are stamped from sheet steel and painted with a black primer. Cover 5 is attached to the body with four spring latches and in the center additionally with a nut for the bracket stud. The bracket is welded to the air filter housing. The tightness of the housing with the cover is ensured by a polyurethane foam gasket glued to the filter cover.
The filter cover is installed in a strictly defined way to eliminate the increase in intake noise. The arrows 4 stamped on the cover and the inlet pipe must be directed towards each other.
Dry filter element 13 is interchangeable with the filter element of the VAZ-2121 engine. The filtering part of the element has the form of an accordion, which is made of special filter cardboard and is filled together with the inner 14 and outer perforated tin shells into elastic covers made of self-hardening sealant, due to which, when the air filter cover 5 is installed, the filter element is reliably sealed with the body and cover. To increase the dust capacity of the filter element, a precleaner 12 made of synthetic wool is put on the outer perforated shell.
The air filter housing has an inlet pipe through which air is sucked in, and a crankcase exhaust ventilation manifold 15. Crankcase gases are sucked off through a hose through manifold 15 into the air filter, into the space behind the filter element, where they mix with purified air and enter the carburetor.
A plastic temperature controller 3 with an air intake 2 of cold air mounted on it is attached to the intake pipe of the housing with a coupling bolt. To reduce intake noise, the air intake is made of polyurethane foam. The lower branch pipe of the thermostat is connected by a corrugated hose 16 to the warm air intake 21, which draws air from the exhaust manifold area.
On VAZ-2109 vehicles, the cold air intake 1 with an air duct has a different design than the VAZ-2108.
The thermostat 3, when the engine is warm, maintains the temperature of the air entering the air filter within 25-35°C.
The thermostat consists of a plastic collapsible housing 6, a hinged damper 7, a rod 8 and a thermal force element 11. The lower arm of the damper is pivotally connected to a composite rod 8. The second end of the rod is pressed by a spring against the pusher 9 of the thermal force element. Rod 10, rigidly connected to the thermo-force element, is screwed into the cork of the thermostat housing. When heated, the temperature-sensitive filler of the thermo-force element 11 expands and acts on the pusher 9, which covers the damper 7 through the rod 8. The thermo-force element is washed by the suction air and, at an air temperature above +35°C, closes the warm air intake pipe with a damper. On the contrary, when the air temperature is below +25°C, the damper closes the cold air intake pipe. At the same time, air will be sucked in heated from the exhaust manifold area. When the air temperature is within plus 25-35°C, the damper is in intermediate positions and maintains the optimum temperature of the air entering the engine.
The exhaust gas outlet includes an exhaust manifold, a downpipe 19, an additional muffler 22 and the main muffler 24. All of them are non-separable nodes.
The downpipe consists of a flange, two pipes and a gas inlet, welded from two stamped halves and closed on both sides with asbestos heat-insulating gaskets and thin-walled casings. The downpipe is made of stainless steel and has increased corrosion resistance. The exhaust pipe is attached to the exhaust manifold studs with disposable self-locking nuts. To eliminate vibration and increase rigidity, the exhaust pipe is additionally attached to the bracket 18 of the engine block. A sealing gasket 17 made of asbestos reinforced with perforated steel tape is installed between the intake pipe flange and the exhaust manifold.
Additional 22 and main 24 mufflers consist of housings 26 and 38, perforated pipes and baffles. The main muffler is made of stainless steel for better corrosion resistance and has no welding points. All parts of the mufflers are interconnected by rolling. The additional silencer is made of steel clad with aluminum 50 microns thick.
The mufflers and the exhaust pipe are interconnected by clamps 20 through sealing rings made of sintered powder steel. Clamps with o-rings greatly facilitate the removal and installation of mufflers.
Silencers on the car are suspended on body brackets on five rubber cushions 25 suspensions.
The exhaust gas outlet of the VAZ-21081 car differs in the design of the exhaust manifold and the exhaust pipe. The exhaust manifold has one outlet and therefore the downpipe has one piping. The design of the bracket and clamping of the intake pipe to the cylinder block has also been changed.
