Dry type air filter with replaceable filter element. The filter housing is attached to four carburetor studs with self-locking nuts and sealed with a rubber gasket.

The filter consists of a housing, cover 5, filter element 13, cold air intake 2 and warm air intake 21 with corrugated hose 16. The housing and cover are stamped from sheet steel and painted with black primer. Cover 5 is attached to the housing with four spring latches and in the center additionally with a nut for the bracket stud. The bracket is welded to the air filter housing. The tightness of the housing with the cover is ensured by a sealing gasket made of polyurethane foam, glued to the filter cover.

The filter cover is installed in a strictly defined manner to prevent increased intake noise. The arrows 4 stamped on the cover and intake pipe must point towards each other.

Dry filter element 13 is interchangeable with the filter element of the VAZ-2121 engine. The filter part of the element has the form of an accordion, which is made of special filter cardboard and is filled together with the inner 14 and outer perforated tin shells into elastic covers made of self-hardening sealant, due to which, when installing the cover 5 of the air filter, the filter element is reliably sealed with the body and the cover. To increase the dust capacity of the filter element, a pre-cleaner 12 made of synthetic cotton wool is put on the outer perforated shell.

The air filter housing has an intake pipe through which air is sucked in, and a manifold 15 of the engine crankcase exhaust ventilation. Crankcase gases are sucked out through a hose through the manifold 15 into the air filter, into the space behind the filter element, where they mix with purified air and enter the carburetor.

A plastic thermostat 3 with a cold air intake 2 mounted on it is secured to the intake pipe of the housing with a tightening bolt. To reduce intake noise, the air intake is made of polyurethane foam. The lower branch pipe of the thermostat is connected by a corrugated hose 16 to the warm air intake 21, which takes air from the exhaust manifold area.

On VAZ-2109 vehicles, the cold air intake 1 with an air duct has a different design, different from that of the VAZ-2108.

Thermoregulator 3, when the engine is warm, maintains the temperature of the air entering the air filter within 25-35°C.

The thermostat consists of a plastic dismountable housing 6, a hinged damper 7, a rod 8 and a thermal power element 11. The lower arm of the damper is connected by a hinge to the composite rod 8. The other end of the rod is pressed by a spring to the pusher 9 of the thermal power element. The rod 10, rigidly connected to the thermal power element, is screwed into the plug of the thermostat housing. The heat-sensitive filler of the thermal power element 11 expands when heated and acts on the pusher 9, which closes the damper 7 through the rod 8. The thermal power element is washed by the suction air and, at an air temperature above +35°C, closes the warm air inlet pipe with the damper. Conversely, at an air temperature below +25°C, the damper closes the cold air inlet pipe. In this case, the air will be sucked in heated from the exhaust manifold area. When the air temperature is within the range of plus 25-35°C, the damper is in intermediate positions and maintains the optimal temperature of the air entering the engine.

The exhaust gas outlet includes the exhaust manifold, the intake pipe 19, the additional 22 and the main 24 mufflers. All of them are non-separable units.

The intake pipe consists of a flange, two pipes and a gas receiver welded from two stamped halves and closed on both sides with asbestos heat-insulating gaskets and thin-walled casings. The intake pipe is made of stainless steel and has increased corrosion resistance. The intake pipe is attached to the studs of the exhaust manifold with disposable self-locking nuts. To eliminate vibration and increase rigidity, the intake pipe is additionally attached to bracket 18 of the engine cylinder block. A sealing gasket 17 made of asbestos reinforced with steel perforated tape is installed between the flange of the intake pipe and the exhaust manifold.

Additional 22 and main 24 mufflers consist of housings 26 and 38, perforated pipes and partitions. The main muffler is made of stainless steel for better corrosion resistance and has no welding points. All muffler parts are joined together by rolling. Additional muffler is made of steel, plated with aluminum 50 microns thick.

The mufflers and the intake pipe are connected to each other with clamps 20 through sealing rings made of sintered powder steel. Clamps with sealing rings significantly facilitate the removal and installation of mufflers.

The mufflers on the car are suspended on the body brackets on five rubber cushions 25 suspensions.

The exhaust gas outlet of the VAZ-21081 car differs in the design of the exhaust manifold and the inlet pipe. The exhaust manifold has one outlet and, therefore, the inlet pipe has one pipeline. The design of the bracket and the clamp for fastening the inlet pipe to the cylinder block has also been changed.
