The body of the VAZ-2101 and VAZ-2103 cars is all-welded, load-bearing, five-seater, four-door; car body VAZ-2102 type «station wagon» with an additional fifth door.
A feature of the appearance and layout of the bodies of these cars (see fig. 1) is:
- simple laconic body shape, relatively flat surfaces with clear edges;
- in the shape of the body there are no elements that artificially create the impression of a fast, dynamic car;
- a large glass area, thin pillars and a short front overhang that improve visibility for the driver;
- the maximum approximation of the passenger compartment to the front wheels, thin doors and seat backs and wide wheel tracks, providing a large volume of the cabin and a comfortable fit for passengers;
- the use of a special air intake box to accommodate an air intake hatch and a wiper, which reduces noise in the passenger compartment when the wiper is running;
- front seats are adjustable in length, angle of inclination of the backrest and fold out to get berths;
- the location of the spare wheel and gas tank, which provides convenient placement of luggage and cargo in the luggage compartment, in the VAZ-2102 car, when the rear seat is folded, the cargo space is additionally increased to obtain a flat floor;
- welded front and rear fenders, increasing the strength of the body; the use of a large number of plastic parts to improve the trim and luggage compartment.
Compliance of the body structure with safety requirements
To improve safety and reduce the severity of injury to passengers in road traffic accidents, the following improvements are provided in the body:
- the outer surface of the body does not have sharp edges and protrusions, and the handles are recessed into the doors so as not to injure pedestrians;
- the hood opens forward in the direction of the car, which ensures safety in case of accidental opening of the hood while driving;
- door locks and hinges withstand heavy loads and do not allow the doors to open spontaneously when the car hits an obstacle, the rear door locks have an additional lock for the safe transportation of children;
- the exterior and interior mirrors provide the driver with good visibility for a correct assessment of the situation on the road, the interior mirror is equipped with a device to prevent the driver from being dazzled by the headlights of the car behind;
- safety glasses are used, which reduce the likelihood of their destruction, and in case of destruction they do not give dangerous cutting fragments and provide sufficient visibility;
- efficient windshield heating system;
- seat adjustment, their shape and elasticity are selected to reduce driver and passenger fatigue during a long trip;
- safe details of the interior of the body were used - soft instrument panel, glove box cover and sun visors.
The rigidity of the body elements is chosen in such a way that when the car hits an obstacle with the front or rear part, the impact energy is smoothly damped due to the deformation of the front or rear part of the body.
On the VAZ-2103 car, additionally installed: soft upholstery of the front part of the roof, door linings and armrests, safety exterior and interior mirrors.
On all bodies, it is possible to install diagonal-lap seat belts for the driver and passengers, which most fully meet the requirements for them. The diagonal belt wraps around the bust and shoulder, while the waist belt wraps around the waist.
Nuts with 7/16 thread are welded to fasten the belts in the body", which is accepted for fastening belts in all countries of the world. The location of the nuts is shown in fig. 2. The nuts on the B-pillar are closed with plastic plugs (on each rack there are two nuts for adjusting the height of the belt attachment point). The nuts on the rear shelf are covered with the shelf upholstery, and the nuts on the floor are closed with rubber plugs under the floor mat!. When installing the belts, the plugs are removed, and holes for fixing bolts are made in the upholstery of the shelf and in the floor mat.
Frame and attachments
Body frame VAZ-2101 (see fig. 3) consists of base 15 (floor with front and back panel), right 17 and left 16 sidewalls with rear fenders assy, roofs 18 with frames of the wind and rear windows, right 20 and left 19 front fenders with amplifiers.
Floor (see fig. 4) consists of front 21 and rear 51 panels, casing 22 above the gearbox, cross members 52, 53, 54, respectively, above the rear axle, under the rear and under the front seats, internal arches 50 of the rear wheels and spars 49 connecting the cross member 53 under the rear seat with the panel 46 rear, as well as spars (in fig. not shown), connecting the cross member 54 under the front seat with the spars 25 of the sub-frame.
The front end consists of mud flaps 23 of the front fenders with struts 24 of the front suspension and spars 25 of the sub-frame, a panel 26 of the radiator lining with a frame 27 of the radiator and a shield 28 of the front end with an air intake box.
The rear panel 46 is reinforced with top 47 and bottom 48 crossbars.
The sidewall consists of a one-piece stamped panel 30, a rear wing 40 with an amplifier, an outer arch 39 of the rear wheel, a central pillar 33 and amplifiers 31, 32, 34, 35 and 37 located along the contour of the sidewall. The right and left sidewalls are interconnected by the crossbars 36 of the instrument panel and the rear shelf 45 with braces.
The roof consists of a panel 38, side panels 44, frames of the wind 41 and rear 43 windows and amplifiers 42.
In the body of the VAZ-2103, the floor, sidewalls, roof, rear shelf are the same as in the body of the VAZ-2101; the frames of the wind and rear windows, the mudguards of the front wheels and the arches of the rear wheels differ slightly from the body parts of the VAZ-2101, and the outer panels (hood, trunk lid, radiator grille and tailgate) new. With the same dimensions of the passenger compartment, the body of the VAZ-2103 is wider than the body of the VAZ-2101 by 12 mm (due to decorative overlays on the wings) and longer by 87 mm. Front and rear shields are welded to the body, blocking the gap between the body and bumpers.
In the VAZ-2102 body, the parts of the front part to the central pillar are used from the VAZ-2101 body, the sidewalls are somewhat different from the sidewall of the VAZ-2101 body, and the roof, rear floor, rear wheel arches, inner sidewall panels, rear fenders, tailgate and amplifiers tailgate opening - new parts. The body of the VAZ-2102 is shorter than the body of the VAZ-2101 by 35 mm.
Parts and assemblies are connected to each other, mainly by resistance spot welding; heavily loaded parts are additionally welded by electric arc welding. The roof with the sidewall is welded by contact roller welding, and the roof panel with the side panels of the roof - by gas welding, followed by cleaning of the seam along the view side; on a painted body, this seam is completely invisible.
The assembly of body components and parts is carried out with great accuracy, which is dictated by both the requirements for ensuring the kinematics of the suspension elements (since the holes for mounting the levers and rods of the front and rear suspensions are made directly in the body parts), and the requirement of the appearance of the car.
The power circuit of the body is a spatial farm (see fig. 5) with box-section elements formed by connecting nodes and parts to each other. The rigidity of this truss ensures the safety of the passenger compartment in the event of a car collision and at the same time does not prevent the body from bending and twisting when the car moves over bumps, which helps to avoid excessive stresses and cracks in body parts.
Removable units - doors, hood and trunk lid (or tailgate VAZ-2102) hung on a welded body. Each of these units consists of two panels - external and internal, interconnected by a flange and traceless spot welding. To increase the rigidity of the hood and trunk lid, their outer and inner panels are glued together along the perimeter of the windows on the inner panels. The rigidity of the outer door panels is ensured by vertical reinforcements welded to them. Side door tops (window openings) are made of steel profiled frames welded to the inner panels of the doors.

The upholstery of the rear part of the roof of the VAZ-2102 car is made of bulk thermoformed sheet plastic; there are cutouts in the upholstery for the passage of the tailgate hinges.
The VAZ-2UZ car has an additional shockproof front part of the roof lining, made similar to the instrument panel. This upholstery has recesses for sun visors and an interior rear-view mirror bracket. The upholstery is attached with screws that simultaneously hold the sun visor brackets and front handrails.
Door upholstery made of PVC film 60 is dielectric welded to a panel 58 of fibreboard coated with a layer of heat-sensitive adhesive. Between the film and the panel is a layer of synthetic weldable wool 59, which serves to improve the comfort of the interior and obtain a decorative pattern on the upholstery. Decorative trims 43 made of metallized plastic are welded to the upholstery in the middle part.
At the bottom of the front door, and on the VAZ-2103 car and the back door there is a pocket for papers. The upholstery is fastened along the top with a holder 44 riveted to the door, and along the rest of the contour - with plastic holders 62, fixed with its foot 61 on the upholstery panel.
Soft pads are installed on the doors of the VAZ-2103 car: their design is the same as that of the front upholstery of the roof and the instrument panel. On the upper part of the lining, they are fastened with antennae, bent from the metal of the lining frame, which enter the holes on the door; on the bottom of the lining are attached to the door with rivets.
The upholstery of the 53rd shelf of the rear of the VAZ-2101 and 2103 cars is made of fiberboard covered with a PVC film.
The side armrests 45 and 47 are fixed to the doors with screws and serve simultaneously as handles for closing the door. On VAZ-2101 and 2102 cars, the armrests are made of a soft plastic cushion, riveted and an internal metal holder to a hard plastic frame. Ashtrays are mounted in the armrests of the rear doors.
The armrests of the VAZ-2103 car are made of integral foam, which has a soft porous inner layer and a thin monolithic outer layer, a metal frame is poured into the foam.

front seats (see fig. 9) separate, each moves on two slides 17 within 155 mm and additionally moves forward by 83 mm when the backs are unfolded into the sleeping position.
The frame 25 of the front seat consists of metal frames of the cushion and backrest, pivotally connected to each other. Springs 26 bent in the form of snakes are attached to the frames. To avoid creaking, the ends of the springs are covered with a layer of polyethylene. 2 back padding made of rubberized vegetable fiber is installed on the frame (coconut lint) and foam padding for 1 pillow.
The seat slide consists of a guide 21 and a slider 23, which moves on two rollers 20 and is centered by two pairs of balls 22. The seat is fixed in the selected position by a latch 18, which, under the action of a spring, enters one of the grooves of the comb latch 19 welded to the slide guide. The latch is released when the handle 24 is pressed down.
The backs have coarse and fine adjustment of the angle of inclination. The tilt adjustment mechanism consists of a rod 14 pivotally connected to the lower part of the back frame, a screw 16 with a plastic handle screwed into the rod, a latch 15 welded to the front of the pillow frame, and a spring 13 that presses the screw against the latch and simultaneously presses the back forward. The annular grooves on the screw shaft engage with the teeth of the retainer. If the screw handle is raised (coarse tilt control), the screw and latch are disengaged and the backrest is pushed forward by spring force or backward by the driver or passenger. When turning the handle (fine adjustment) the screw is held in place by a retainer, and the threaded end of the screw moves the backrest through the rod.
The rear seat consists of a cushion and a separate backrest. The pillow is fixed with holes 11 in the frame on two spikes welded to the floor cross member. The backrest is attached in the upper part with two slats 9 included in the brackets welded to the tailgate shelf; in the lower part, the backrest is fastened with two brackets 10, which include tongues welded to the rear wheel arches. A folding middle armrest is built into the back of the rear seat of the VAZ-2103 car.
The frames of the rear seat cushion and backrest consist of thin frames, to which the springs are attached with 8 metal brackets, covered with a PVC film to prevent squeaking. A foam padding 6 is installed on the pillow frame, under which there is a gasket 3 made of vegetable felt. The same spacer 5 is attached to the cushion springs to prevent the springs from squeaking.
The padding of the back 7 is made of rubberized vegetable fiber.
The upholstery of the seats of VAZ-2101 and 2102 cars made of elastic artificial leather on a knitted basis is welded with a substrate 4 made of synthetic wool, which serves to obtain decorative reliefs on the upholstery.
The upholstery of the seats of the VAZ-2103 car is combined: the middle is made of cloth, and the edges are made of elastic artificial leather. These materials are stitched with a foam sheet backing. The side part of the front seats is covered with plastic lining 12.
On a VAZ-2102 car, the rear seat folds down to increase the area of the cargo compartment; at the same time, the pillow leans back on the hinges to a vertical position, and the back rests in place of the pillow. In the normal position, the backrest is held by plastic clips attached to the sidewalls of the body.
Body mechanisms and accessories
Door opening limiter (see fig. 10) made from spring wire. The bent ends of the limiter 30 enter the lugs of the plate 27 welded to the body pillars. The limiter passes inside the door through a hole sealed with a rubber gasket and covers the plastic roller 29. When the door is fully opened, the roller unclenches the branches of the narrowed section of the limiter and moves to its expanded section, limiting the opening of the door and at the same time holding the door in the open position.
Power window door (see fig. 10) - cable. The cable 42 covers the rollers fixed on the door and is wound on the drum 41, the ring gear of which is engaged with the drive gear 40. A spring brake mechanism is located coaxially with the gear, which prevents the glass from spontaneous lowering. On the vertical section of the cable between the rollers 43 and 46, the clip 45 of the sliding glass 44 is fixed. The roller 47 serves to tension the cable; the bolt and nut of this roller are preliminarily tightened and shifted on the oval hole of the door by a blow through a special device 48, which rests on the nut and bolt head. After tensioning the cable, the bolt and nut are finally tightened.
The window regulator handle 31 is fixed on the spline shaft 35 of the drive gear with a spring clip 32 inserted into the grooves of the handle and entering the shaft groove. To remove the handle, a special plate 33 is inserted between the handle and the plastic socket 34 located under it, which spreads the edges of the spring clip with its ends and removes it from the groove of the roller. When the handle is installed on the roller, the bracket 32, previously inserted into the handle, is unclenched by the conical end of the roller and snaps into its groove.
Door lock (see fig. eleven) rotary type; when closing the door, the protrusions of the rotor 59 run into the tooth of the latch 61, fixed on the body pillar, and turn the roller and the ratchet 51 located on it, which is locked by the external drive lever 49. The ratchet has two teeth corresponding to the positions of preliminary and full closing of the door. This is done so that when the car is moving, the door does not open spontaneously if it is not completely closed. When the door is fully closed, the second protrusion of the rotor 59 enters the cavity of the latch 61, and the external drive lever 49 holds the ratchet 51 by the second tooth. When the outer door handle is raised, the outer drive lever 49 is rotated, the ratchet 51 is released, and under the pressure of the compressed seal, the door opens. When pulling the inner handle 62 connected to the handle rod 65 through the intermediate lever 58 turns the lever 49 of the outer drive and removes it from the ratchet 51.
To lock the doors from the inside and safely transport children, locks are provided. When the blocking button is pressed, the rod connected to the button turns the additional lever 57 into a position in which it prevents the external drive lever 49 from turning. The blocking buttons are located on all doors near the central pillars of the body, which provides free access to them from the driver's seat. The locked front door lock is released when the inner door handle 62 is pulled. The rear door locks can only be unlocked by lifting the button, and can be locked as if the doors were closed (pressing the button after closing the door), as well as in open (the button can be pressed when the door is open, and then close the door).
A washer 52 is located on the lock roller next to the rotor, which comes into contact with the retainer cracker and prevents the door from moving vertically when the car is moving. At the same time, the washer 52 does not allow the doors to spontaneously open in the event of a collision or overturning of the vehicle, when, due to deformation of the door or body opening, the door lock rotor tends to disengage from the latch in the direction along the vehicle. The washer goes beyond the walls of the housing of the latch 61 and prevents such movement of the door.
The mechanism of locks and latches in its design and strength complies with safety requirements.
External door handles - safe, recessed, i.e. not protruding above the surface of the body. The front door handles have a key actuated cylinder connected by a rod 55 to the door lock lever 57. For security reasons, the shape and position of the interior handles 62 on the door are chosen to prevent the door from being opened if the handle is accidentally touched. The axis of the handle is located in a plastic housing 64, fixed under the door trim. The protruding parts of the body and the opening in the door upholstery are covered with chrome trim.
Hood lock (see fig. 12) consists of body 71, locking hook 73, ejector 72 and spring 68. The lock is unlocked by handle 67 located under the instrument panel on the driver's side. The rod 74, passing in the plastic shell 75 and connected to the handle, retracts the locking hook 73. This releases the pin 70, welded to the reinforcement 69 of the inner panel of the hood, and the ejector 72, under the action of the spring 68, raises the hood above the surface of the body. In the closed position, the hood pin is fixed with a locking hook.
Trunk lid lock (see fig. 12) is fixed together with the drive 78 on the inner panel of the lid and consists of a body 76 and a base 77, between which a hook 81 with a spring 80 is placed. The base of the lock has a spike that fits into the groove of the latch 82 and centers the trunk lid. The hook is engaged by the edge of the latch groove. The drive 78 of the lock consists of a housing and a cylinder with larvae placed in it. When the cylinder is turned with the key 79 on the VAZ-2101 car, the hook 81 turns and disengages from the latch 82. On the VAZ-2102 and VAZ-2103 cars, the lock is unlocked when the cylinder is turned with the key and then pressed on the cylinder head.

Internal rear-view mirror of VAZ-2101 and VAZ-2102 cars (see fig. 13) can be adjusted on a spherical joint for installation in a position convenient for viewing, and can also be switched to a position that eliminates the blinding of the driver by the headlights of a moving car behind. Mirror glass 4 and a transparent glass screen 3 are inserted into body 1 and a transparent glass screen 3 is inserted at an angle to it. The body is connected to switch plate 9, relative to which it can rotate at an angle equal to the angle of the mirror to the screen. The handle 12 of the switch is pivotally connected to the lower part of the body. The upper end of the handle is connected to the switch plate by spring 10, which fixes the body in one of two positions. In the normal position of the housing, the light passes through the screen and, reflected from the mirror, enters the driver's eyes. When blinded by bright light, the driver removes the switch handle, while the mirror housing turns and the screen becomes the place previously occupied by the mirror. The bright light from the mirror travels down, and the driver's eyes are hit by weak light reflected from the screen.
In the mirror of the VAZ-2103 car there is a separate base 18 with a pin 19, fixed on the frame of the wind window. The spring holder 17, riveted to the bracket 15 of the mirror, tightly covers the finger 19. Such a fastening in the event of a passenger hitting the mirror with his head in a car collision ensures that the mirror with the bracket is detached from its base 18, which prevents a serious injury to the head. The overall dimensions of this mirror are increased to improve visibility, and instead of a separate mirror and a screen, solid wedge-shaped glass 13 is used, the outer surface of which acts as a screen, the inner surface is covered with a mirror amalgam. Such a mirror gives a clearer image.
The outside rear-view mirror of VAZ-2101 and VAZ-2102 cars is spherical. Mirror glass 26 is held in body 24 by plastic frame 25 and pressed against it by spring 28 through gasket 27.
In the mirror of the VAZ-2103 car, the bracket 15 is connected by a spherical hinge to the base 33 attached to the door. When hitting a mirror, its bracket rotates on the lower hinge and shifts so that the mirror does not go beyond the dimensions of the body. The base is fixed to the door through a plastic gasket 34, two hollow protrusions of which, entering the door openings, are expanded with fixing screws and firmly held by the edges of the openings in the door. The inner surface of the mirror is pasted over with film 31, so that when it hits the mirror, glass fragments do not fall out, leading to injury.
Heating and ventilation
Interior heating is provided by air heated in the heater radiator, which is included in the engine cooling system. Air (see fig. 14) passes through the grate 39 in the rear of the hood and enters the hatch, covered with a rainwater reflector 49. The air separated from the water enters the radiator 45, located in a plastic casing 40, in the upper part of which there is a cover 38. On the right tank of the radiator, divided inside into two parts by a rubber partition, an outlet tube 51 and an underwater tube with a tap 50 are fixed. These tubes are connected hoses to the engine cooling system. The air from the radiator enters the plastic casing of the fan 41, in the center of which is fixed the electric motor 43 with a plastic impeller 44. Along the rear wall of the casing, the air rises to two rotary deflectors 48. In the lower part of the casing there is a cover 42, when opened, the air is directed to the feet of the passengers.
The heater is controlled by switch 52, which provides low or high rotation speed of the electric fan, deflectors 48, directing air to the windshield or passengers, cover 42 of the fan casing and two handles in the middle part of the instrument panel. The upper handle 46 is connected by a flexible rod to the cover 38 of the radiator casing and regulates the amount of fresh air entering the heater, the lower handle 47 is connected by a flexible rod to the heater tap 50 and regulates the amount of liquid entering the radiator.
The ventilation of the passenger compartment is carried out by supplying fresh air through the lowering and turning windows of the doors, as well as through the deflectors and the cover of the fan casing. The VAZ-2103 car has an exhaust ventilation that provides air suction from the passenger compartment. Air passes through the upholstery gap at the rear window, depresses the rubber valve and exits through the decorative grille on the roof side panel. The valve prevents air from entering the body during crosswinds.
Body sealing
Sealing the body to a large extent determines the comfort of the car. Details and components of the body of VAZ cars are adjusted with great precision, and their joints are carefully sealed.
The air intake box is protected from ingress of smoky air from the engine compartment with a rubber seal 53 (see fig. 15), fixed with a metal perforated frame 54, inserted into the lower part of the seal.
The sponge rubber trunk lid seal 64 has a similar design. Door seals 63 are made of sponge rubber in the form of a tube with a process, to which a plastic facing edge 62 is sewn with threads. A metal perforated frame 61 is inserted inside the edge.
The rear window glass seal on the sides is smeared with non-drying mastic so that rainwater does not seep into the passenger compartment when the maximum air vacuum is created in it (when the car is moving with the air intake hatch closed, the door windows raised and the swing windows open). To prevent water from seeping out from under the windshield glass seal 59 under the same conditions, plastic tubes 75 are installed in the lower corners of the openings, which drain water outside the car interior.
Seals 60 edges of sliding glass doors are made of rubber, covered with pile to reduce glass friction. Upholstery of doors and mechanisms of the lock and power window are protected from water by plastic film 73.
The space behind the bulkhead between the front fender and the side panel of the front is protected from dirt by a rubber seal 55.
The holes for the bumper brackets and for the door stop are sealed with rubber gaskets 65 and 71.
The cavities of the bulkhead and the frame of the wind window are plugged with rubber seals 74 and 76, the cavities of the rear pillars are plugged with foam pads 66. The partition 70 has foam rubber seals along the contour. The holes in the rear shelf are closed with PVC film 69. The welds are sealed with mastic 77, which hardens when the body is dried after painting. Gaps in various joints of body parts are sealed with non-drying mastic 68. Technological openings are closed with rubber plugs 72.
Thermal and sound insulation of the body
The floor and door panels are covered from the inside with bituminous soundproofing pads 90, 92 and 94 (see fig. 16). Anti-squeak bitumen pads 81, 87 and 89 are installed on the amplifiers of the doors and rear fenders, as well as on the upper corners of the wind window frame. Anti-vibration pads 83, 84 and 95 are installed on the roof reinforcements, the windscreen frame and in the ribs of the inner hood panel, which stick to the mating parts and do not allow them to move away from each other. The front part of the passenger compartment is covered with textile-bitumen thermal and noise insulation pads 80 and 93. The rear part of the floor, the rear wheel arches, the rear shelf and the partition panel are covered with vegetable felt 85, 86, 88 and 91. Thermal and noise insulation pads 82 are glued to the roof. On the inner panel of the hood of a VAZ- 2103 with plastic holders 79, a textile noise-insulating gasket 78, upholstered with perforated PVC film, is fixed. Rubber buffers are installed under the rear corners of the hood, the roof of the fuel hatch, on the lower pins of the radiator lining and on the brackets for the stop of the lowering door windows.
All these measures provide good sealing and thermal and sound insulation of the body.
