Note. On a car timing belt (gas distribution mechanism) should be replaced every 45,000 km. During the operation of the car, it is necessary to periodically check the tension and technical condition of the timing belt. To check its tension, a special indicator is needed. But the work of adjusting the tension can be done with sufficient accuracy and without it. The timing belt must be clean - free of dirt and oil on its surface. A timing belt with tears, cracks, delaminations, sheared or worn teeth, abrasions to the cord must be replaced immediately.
Warning. Timing belt adjustment should be done on a cold engine.
To perform tension adjustment, you will need:
- wrench for tensioning the timing belt;
- calipers;
- household steelyard.
We hook the hook of the steelyard to the handle of the socket wrench extension. We fix the hook of the steelyard on the extension with insulating tape or tape.
Checking the condition and adjusting the timing belt tension
1. We prepare the car for work (see "Preparing the car for maintenance and repair").
2. On the injection engine VAZ 21124 (l,6i) remove the upper part of the front cover of the timing belt drive (see paragraphs 3, 4 "Front timing belt cover - removal and installation").
On the injection engine VAZ 2112 (l,5i) remove the front cover of the gas distribution mechanism.
Note. To check the condition and tension of the timing belt on the VAZ 2112 injection engine, it is enough to remove the plug from the front cover.
3. Remove the right mudguard of the engine compartment (see points 1-4 "Mudguards of the engine compartment - removal and installation").
4. Rotating crankshaft (clockwise for the pulley bolt) socket wrench 17 mm, inspect the timing belt.
Warning. Oil and dirt on the timing belt will shorten its life.
5. We check the timing belt tension in the middle part of the branch between the camshaft pulleys. We lay a screwdriver with a long blade on the camshaft pulleys. Through the extension, pressing on the timing belt with a force of 10 kgf, we measure its deflection with a caliper, which should be 5.4 mm.
Note. On a car with a 2112 engine, the deflection of the timing belt can be measured from the edge of the front cover (if it's not removed). First you need to determine the distance from the edge of the cover to the belt and take this size into account when measuring.
If the deflection is greater than the specified one, we tighten the timing belt, if the belt is pulled, we loosen its tension.
Tension adjustment
1. With a 17 mm wrench, loosen the tightening nut of the tension roller.
2. With a special key, turning the tension roller, we adjust the tension of the timing belt. Without releasing the tension roller, tighten the nut of its fastening.
Warning. Excessive tension on the timing belt will shorten its life and may lead to failure of the coolant pump bearings, idler and idler rollers.
3. We install the removed parts on the car in the reverse order of removal.
