Warning. When replacing the bearings of the differential or its housing, it is necessary to re-select the thickness of the adjusting ring (see "Gearbox adjusting ring - selection of rings").
Disassembly
1. We press the bearing from the differential housing.
2. We install the paws of the puller in the recesses of the seat of the differential bearing.
Warning. When performing the following work, be careful not to damage the differential bearing seat. If there are still scratches on it, remove them with a needle file.
3. To remove the second differential bearing, a puller with special grips is required. If not, insert a chisel between the stop of the bearing seat and its inner ring. With light hammer blows on the chisel, we shift the differential bearing by a few millimeters.
4. We introduce the grips of the puller into the gap formed and finally compress the differential bearing.
5. Prying with a screwdriver, we compress the plastic drive gear of the vehicle speed sensor.
6. Remove the two side gears.
7. With expanding tongs, spread and remove the retaining ring of the axis of the differential satellites.
8. We take out an axis towards the second locking ring.
9. Remove the satellites from the differential case and remove the second retaining ring from the axis of the satellites.
10. Using a 17 mm socket wrench, unscrew the eight bolts securing the final drive driven gear.
11. Tap the gear lightly with a soft metal hammer. Through a punch, we press the gear from the differential housing.
12. The differential gear is stamped with a marking indicating the number of teeth on the drive and driven gears.
Assembly
Assemble the differential in reverse order. At the same time, we install the driven gear on the differential housing with the unmarked side to the seat. Before tightening the bolts for fastening the driven gear, degrease their threaded part and apply adhesive fixative to it.
Lubricate the friction surfaces of parts during assembly with clean gear oil.
We install the drive gear of the vehicle speed sensor so that its protrusions enter two deeper and narrower recesses in the differential housing. The other two - wider recesses - are designed for puller grips.
After installing the side gears in the differential, make sure that their holes line up with the holes in the differential housing for installing the drives.
So that the side gears do not fall out of the differential case when assembling the gearbox, we fix them with a mandrel by installing it in the hole of the differential box.
