Engine won't start
Cause of malfunction | Elimination Method |
1. The switch does not receive voltage pulses from the proximity sensor: | 1. Do the following: |
- a break in the wires between the ignition distributor and the switch; | - check the wires and their connections; replace damaged wires; |
- Proximity sensor defective. | - check the sensor with a connector and a voltmeter; Replace defective sensor. |
2. No current pulses arrive at the primary winding of the ignition coil: | 2. Do the following: |
- a break in the wires connecting the switch to the relay or to the ignition coil; | - check the wires and their connections; replace damaged wires; |
- the switch is faulty; | - check the switch with an oscilloscope; replace the faulty switch; |
- the ignition switch or relay does not work. | - check, replace the faulty contact part of the switch or ignition relay. |
3. No high voltage applied to spark plugs: | 3. Do the following: |
- loosely seated in the nests, the tips of the high-voltage wires are torn off or oxidized; wires are heavily soiled or their insulation is damaged; | - check and repair connections, clean or replace wires; |
- wear or damage to the contact carbon, its hanging in the cover of the ignition sensor-distributor; | - check and, if necessary, replace the contact angle; |
- current leakage through cracks or burnouts in the cover or rotor of the ignition distribution sensor, through carbon deposits or moisture on the inner surface of the cover; | - check, clean the lid from moisture and carbon deposits, replace the lid and rotor if they have cracks; |
- burnout of the resistor in the rotor of the ignition distributor; | - replace the resistor; |
- Damaged ignition coil. | - Replace the ignition coil. |
4/ The spark plug electrodes are oily or the gap between them is not correct. | 4. Clean the spark plugs and adjust the gap between the electrodes. |
5. Damaged spark plugs (cracked insulator). | 5. Replace spark plugs with new ones. |
6. The procedure for connecting high voltage wires to the terminals of the cover of the ignition distributor sensor is violated. | 6. Connect the wires in ignition order 1-3-4-2. |
7. Incorrect ignition timing. | 7. Check, adjust the ignition timing. |
Engine runs erratically or stalls at idle
Cause of malfunction | Elimination Method |
1. Too early ignition in the engine cylinders. | 1. Check, adjust the ignition timing. |
2. Check, adjust the gap between the electrodes. | 2. Large gap between the electrodes of the spark plugs. |
The engine runs unevenly and unstably at a high crankshaft speed
Cause of malfunction | Elimination Method |
1. The springs of the weights of the ignition timing regulator in the ignition distributor have weakened. | 1. Replace the springs, check the operation of the centrifugal regulator on the stand. |
Interruptions in the operation of the engine in all modes
Cause of malfunction | Elimination Method |
1. The wires in the ignition system are damaged, the fastening of the wires is loosened or their tips are oxidized. | 1. Check the wires and their connections. Replace damaged wires. |
2. Deterioration of electrodes or oiling of spark plugs, significant soot; cracks in the spark plug insulator. | 2. Check the spark plugs, adjust the gap between the electrodes, replace damaged spark plugs. |
3. Wear or damage to the contact carbon in the cover of the ignition distributor. | 3. Replace contact carbon. |
4. Strong burning of the central contact of the ignition sensor-distributor rotor. | 4. Strip the center contact. |
5. Cracks, contamination or burnouts in the rotor or cover of the ignition distributor. | 5. Check, replace rotor or cover. |
6. Faulty switch - the shape of the pulses on the primary winding of the ignition coil is not correct. | 6. Check the switch with an oscilloscope, replace the defective switch. |
The engine does not develop full power and does not have sufficient throttle response
Cause of malfunction | Elimination Method |
1. Incorrect ignition timing. | 1. Check, adjust the ignition timing. |
2. Jamming of the weights of the ignition timing regulator, weakening of the springs of the weights. | 2. Check, replace damaged parts. |
3. Faulty switch - the shape of the pulses on the primary winding of the ignition coil is not correct. | 3. Check the switch with an oscilloscope, replace the defective switch. |
