The brake pads of the rear brake mechanisms are changed only as a set, that is, simultaneously on both wheels.
For repair work on replacing the rear brake pads, you will need pliers with thin curved jaws (round nose pliers).
Removing
1. We prepare the car for repair work (see paragraphs 2b and 4 "Preparing the car for maintenance and repair").
2. With two mounting blades, we reduce the pads as much as possible (see "Brake drum - removal and installation").
3. Using a thin slotted screwdriver or pliers, disconnect the pressure spring from the front brake pad of the rear wheel.
4. Pliers disconnect and remove the lower coupling spring of the brake pads.
5. We take the lower part of the front brake pad to the side until the pad exits the slot of the spacer bar.
6. Then, turning the brake shoe, we shift its lower part towards us and reduce it to the rear brake shoe, weakening the tension of the coupling spring.
7. Remove the front brake shoe, upper return spring and handbrake spacer bar.
8. With thin pliers, disconnect the clamping spring of the rear brake pad...
... and remove the brake shoe together with the hand brake spacer lever, removing its hook from the hand brake cable tip.
9. Unpin the axle pin with pliers. Remove the washer, spacer lever and axle pin from the brake shoe.
10. We examine the working brake cylinder. If even slight traces of a brake fluid leak are found, we change the working brake cylinder (see "Rear brake cylinder - removal, installation, replacement").
11. We clean the parts of the brake mechanism from dirt and corrosion.
12. We check the brake drum for cracks, heavy wear or deep scratches on the working surface of the brake drum. If necessary, replace the brake drum (see "Brake drum - removal and installation").
Installation
1. We install on the car the parts removed during disassembly in reverse order.
2. Similarly, we replace the brake pads of the rear right brake mechanism.
3. To self-adjust the gap between the brake pads and brake drums, after complete assembly of the brake mechanism, press the brake pedal several times.
4. Adjust the handbrake (see "Checking and adjusting the hand brake").
