Cause of malfunction
Elimination Method
The control lamp of the category of the storage battery lights up at the working engine
| |
Loose or broken water pump belt
Tighten or replace belt
Damaged voltage regulator. To test, use two DC sources of 12 and 15 V (see electrical equipment) or substitute a known-good regulator
Replace failed regulator
Faulty circuit «instrument cluster - conclusion «61» generator»
Check wire «KB» from instrument cluster to output «61» generator. Clean oxidized contacts, crimp terminals
The brushes are stuck or worn, the slip rings of the rotor are oxidized, there is no contact between the brush leads and the voltage regulator (the generator produces the required voltage only at high speeds with a small recoil current). The excitation winding of the rotor is not damaged - the resistance between the slip rings is about 4 ohms (measured after the regulator is disconnected)
Clean the slip rings with glass paper, check for runout. Eliminate the sticking of the brushes, if they are worn out, replace the voltage regulator
Desoldering the excitation winding leads from slip rings, short circuit or open circuit in the winding (the generator produces the required voltage only at high speeds with a small recoil current). Resistance between slip rings less than 3 ohms or infinity (measured after the regulator is disconnected)
Replace alternator rotor or alternator assembly
An open or short circuit in the stator winding, shorting it to «mass» (generator howls when closed)
Check the winding with an ohmmeter. Replace stator or generator assembly
Damage to the main valves of the rectifier unit
Replace rectifier
Damage to additional valves of the rectifier unit (supplying the excitation winding), while the generator produces the required voltage only at high speeds with a small recoil current. The valves are checked with an ohmmeter after disassembling the generator
Replace rectifier
Discharge indicator lamp
battery does not light up
but the battery is charging badly
(Difficulty cranking the engine when starting). The voltage in the on-board network is below 13.6 V
| |
Poorly tensioned water pump belt
Tighten or replace belt
Too many powerful electrical consumers are switched on, especially at low engine speeds. Short circuit in consumers (usually these are motor windings)
Limit the use of large consumers at idle, do not connect additional consumers in excess of the allowable power of the generator, check the motor windings for short circuits
Loose fastening or oxidized wire lugs on the output «plus» generator or battery
Strip the terminals and lugs, tighten the connections
The battery discharge warning lamp flashes when the engine is running. The battery is being recharged (electrolyte levels drop rapidly). The voltage in the vehicle's on-board network is higher than 14.7 V (Bulbs burn out frequently)
| |
Faulty voltage regulator
Replace Regulator
Poor contact between «weight» car and «weight» voltage regulator
Clean oxidized surfaces, tighten fasteners
The battery discharge warning lamp does not light up when the ignition is turned on
| |
Bulb burnt out
Replace lamp
Blown fuse #2
Replace the fuse, eliminate the cause of its blown (check protected circuits with an ohmmeter)
Open in the power supply circuit of the instrument cluster
Check the operation of the ignition switch, ignition relay, wire «G» from ignition switch to ignition relay, wire «MS» from ignition relay to fuse box, wire «ABOUT» from the fuse box to the instrument cluster and wire «H», connecting the latter with «weight». Clean the contact surfaces, crimp the terminals. Replace faulty relay, ignition switch (or its contact part)
Generator noise
| |
Damaged alternator bearings (squeal, howl), wear of the seat in the generator cover. (The noise remains when the wires are disconnected from the generator, but disappears if the belt is removed)
Replace bearings or alternator assembly
Rotor hits stator
Check the runout of the rotor shaft, wear of bearings and seats. Replace defective parts or alternator assembly
Loose alternator pulley
Tighten the fixing nut
Short circuit in the stator winding, shorting it to «mass» (generator howls). The noise disappears if you disconnect the wires from the generator
Replace stator or generator assembly
Short circuit in one of the main valves. The noise disappears if you disconnect the wires from the generator
Replace rectifier
Squeaky brushes
Lightly clean the contact rings with glass sandpaper, wipe with a cloth soaked in gasoline, check for runout.
