To remove the power unit, roll the car onto a lift (better two post) and brake it with a parking brake. Install stops under the rear wheels, hang out the front wheels and open the hood. Raise the car on a lift and remove the engine mudguard (bipartite), by unscrewing the bolts of its fastening to the body.
The coolant is drained from the radiator, cylinder block and heater, for which the drain plugs on the cylinder block and radiator are unscrewed (just two plugs), remove the cover of the expansion tank and open the heater valve by moving the lower heater control lever to the right. Drain the oil from the gearbox by unscrewing the drain plug and lower the car.
Disconnect the wire from the terminal «minus» battery. Disconnect the wires from the starter and generator, from the sensors of the coolant temperature indicator and the oil pressure warning lamp, from the limit switch and the carburetor solenoid valve. Disconnect the low voltage wires and the high voltage wire going to the ignition coil from the ignition distributor sensor. Remove the top dead center sensor by unscrewing the screw securing it to the clutch housing. Disconnect the ground wire from the power unit by unscrewing the nut that secures the wire tip to the clutch housing.
Remove the air filter by disconnecting the crankcase ventilation hose from the cylinder head cover, and the warm air supply hose from the warm air intake. Close the carburetor from above with a technological plug.
Disconnect the gasoline supply hose from the fuel pump, and the gasoline drain hose from the carburetor. Disconnect the tube leading to the econometer from the inlet pipeline, and the vacuum hose from the vacuum brake booster. Disconnect the coolant outlet hose to the radiator from the pipe on the cylinder head, and the coolant inlet hose and the fluid outlet hose to the expansion tank from the thermostat.
Disconnect the carburetor air and throttle drive cables from the engine by unscrewing the nuts and the screw securing the cable sheaths to the brackets on the cylinder head and carburetor and disconnecting the cable ends from the carburetor.
The flexible shaft of the speedometer drive is disconnected from the gearbox by unscrewing the union nut for this, and the clutch cable by unscrewing the nuts securing the cable sheath to the bracket and disconnecting the tip of the cable from the clutch fork lever. Measures are taken to ensure that when removing the engine, there are no sharp bends in the speedometer drive shaft.
If the engine is removed using a hoist, then the engine is stopped by the brackets mounted on the cylinder head and gearbox. Raise the car on the lift while tightening the hoist chain so that the power unit remains suspended.
Disconnect the wires from the reverse light switch mounted on the gearbox. Disconnect the rod 10 (see fig. 66) of the gear lever drive from the hinge of the gear selection rod by unscrewing the clamp bolt 12.
Disconnect the halves of the clamp 4 (see fig. 20), which tightens the exhaust pipe 3 with the pipe of the additional muffler. Take out the sealing ring located between the pipes, and disconnect the front pipe from the pipe of the additional muffler. Disconnect the fluid inlet and outlet hoses to the heater from the branch pipes on the bulkhead.
Unscrew the bolts of fastening to the body of the brackets 10 (see fig. 85) stretch marks 8 of the front suspension, loosen the nuts securing the stretch marks to the levers 1 and turn the stretch marks to such a position that they do not interfere with the removal of the power unit. Disconnect the ball joints 13 suspension arms from the steering knuckles.
Removed from semi-axial gears of gearbox 5 (see fig. 66) tips of the internal hinges of the shafts 6 of the front wheel drive. You can take it out with a special puller or by hitting hard with a hammer through a drift on the body of the inner hinge. Move the front wheel drive shafts to the side.
Having disconnected one of the shafts, the side gear is fixed with a technological plug or mandrel so that it does not fall into the gearbox housing. After disconnecting the second shaft, the hole is also closed with a plug.
If the power unit is removed using a special trolley with a hydraulic lift, then bring it under the car and raise the support brackets of the hydraulic lift until it stops in the power unit.
Unscrew the bolts securing the suspension supports of the power unit to the body and lower it down with a hydraulic lift. If a hoist is used, then gradually releasing the hoist chain, carefully lower the power unit onto the trolley.
Install the power unit in the reverse order of removal. Before connecting the front wheel drive shafts, install new retaining rings on the tips of the internal hinges. The reuse of lock rings is not allowed, as this can lead to spontaneous disconnection of the shafts from the gearbox when the vehicle is moving.
After connecting the actuators of the air and throttle valves to the carburetor, they are adjusted as described in Sec. «Engine adjustment». The clutch release drive is also regulated (see sect. «Clutch»), Check and adjust the alignment of the front wheels (see ch. 3).
Having installed the engine on the car, carefully check the quality of the installation. Let the engine run for a while, and then check for leaks of coolant and fuel in the pipe connections and, if necessary, tighten the connections. They check whether the contacts of the wires of the electrical equipment are reliable and whether the signal lamps on the instrument panel work correctly.
