Removal and installation of the power unit (VAZ-2108)

The power unit, which consists of the engine, clutch, gearbox and main gear, is removed from the engine compartment downwards. In this case, the ends of the front wheel drive shafts are disconnected from the power unit and remain on the car. The power unit can be removed using a hoist, lowering it down onto a trolley, or using a special trolley equipped with a hydraulic lift.

To remove the power unit, roll the car onto a lift (better two-post) and brake it with the parking brake. Place chocks under the rear wheels, hang up the front wheels and open the hood. Raise the car on a lift and remove the engine splash guard (consisting of two parts), by unscrewing the bolts that secure it to the body.

Drain the coolant from the radiator, cylinder block and heater, for which unscrew the drain plugs on the cylinder block and radiator (just two plugs), remove the expansion tank cap and open the heater tap by moving the lower heater control lever to the right. Drain the oil from the gearbox by unscrewing the drain plug and lower the car.

Disconnect the wire from the negative terminal of the battery. Disconnect the wires from the starter and generator, from the coolant temperature gauge and oil pressure warning lamp sensors, from the limit switch and the carburetor electromagnetic valve. Disconnect the low-voltage wires and the high-voltage wire going to the ignition coil from the ignition distributor sensor. Remove the top dead center sensor by unscrewing the screw securing it to the clutch housing. Disconnect the ground wire from the power unit by unscrewing the nut securing the wire tip to the clutch housing.



Remove the air filter by disconnecting the crankcase ventilation hose from the cylinder head cover and the warm air supply hose from the warm air intake. Close the carburetor from above with a technological plug.

Disconnect the fuel supply hose from the fuel pump, and the fuel drain hose from the carburetor. Disconnect the tube leading to the economizer from the intake manifold, and the vacuum hose from the brake booster. Disconnect the coolant drain hose to the radiator from the pipe on the cylinder head, and the coolant supply hose and the coolant drain hose to the expansion tank from the thermostat.

Disconnect the air and throttle valve drive cables from the engine by unscrewing the nuts and screw securing the cable casings to the brackets on the cylinder head and carburetor and disconnecting the cable ends from the carburetor.

The flexible speedometer drive shaft is disconnected from the gearbox by unscrewing the union nut, and the clutch drive cable by unscrewing the nuts securing the cable sheath to the bracket and disconnecting the cable tip from the clutch release fork lever. Measures are taken to ensure that there are no sharp bends in the speedometer drive shaft when removing the engine.

If the engine is removed using a hoist, the engine is stopped by the clamps installed on the cylinder head and gearbox. The car is raised on a lift, while simultaneously tightening the hoist chain so that the power unit remains suspended.

Disconnect the wires from the reverse light switch mounted on the gearbox. Disconnect the rod 10 (see figure 66) the gear shift lever drive from the gear selection rod hinge by unscrewing the clamp bolt 12.


Disconnect the halves of the clamp 4 (see figure 20), which tightens the inlet pipe 3 with the pipe of the additional muffler. Remove the sealing ring located between the pipes and disconnect the inlet pipe from the pipe of the additional muffler. Disconnect the hoses for supplying and draining liquid to the heater from the pipes on the front shield.

Loosen the bolts securing the brackets to the body 10 (see figure 85) 8 front suspension struts, loosen the nuts securing the struts to the levers 1 and turn the struts to a position so that they do not interfere with the removal of the power unit. Disconnect the ball joints 13 of the suspension arms from the steering knuckles.

Remove from the gearbox axle gears 5 (see figure 66) tips of the inner joints of the shafts 6 of the front wheel drive. You can remove them with a special puller or by hitting the inner joint body with a hammer through a punch. Move the front wheel drive shafts to the side.

Having disconnected one of the shafts, fix the axle gear with a technological plug or mandrel so that it does not fall into the gearbox housing. After disconnecting the second shaft, also close the hole with a plug.

If the power unit is removed using a special trolley with a hydraulic lift, then it is moved under the car and the support brackets of the hydraulic lift are raised until they stop against the power unit.

Loosen the bolts securing the power unit suspension supports to the body and lower it down with the hydraulic lift. If a hoist is used, then gradually release the hoist chain and carefully lower the power unit onto the trolley.

Install the power unit in the reverse order of removal. Before connecting the front wheel drive shafts, install new retaining rings on the inner joint tips. Reusing retaining rings is not allowed, as this may lead to spontaneous disconnection of the shafts from the gearbox while the vehicle is moving.

After connecting the air and throttle valve drives to the carburetor, adjust them as described in the section "Engine Adjustment". The clutch release drive is also adjusted (see section. "Clutch"), Check and adjust the front wheel alignment angles (see chapter 3).

After installing the engine on the car, carefully check the quality of the installation. Let the engine run for some time, and then check for coolant and fuel leaks in the pipe connections and tighten the connections if necessary. Check whether the electrical equipment wire contacts are reliable and whether the signal lights on the instrument panel are working correctly.
