Four poles with excitation windings are fixed with screws in the starter housing: three series (consistent) and one shunt (parallel). The body together with the covers is tightened with two bolts. The anchor is with an end collector. The rear end of the anchor shaft rotates in a metal-ceramic bushing pressed into the cover from the collector side, and the front end rotates in a bushing pressed into the cover from the drive side.
A freewheel clutch is installed on the drive shaft (overrunning clutch) with a drive pinion. It transmits torque in only one direction - from the starter to the engine, disengaging them after the engine starts. This is necessary to protect the starter anchor from damage due to excessive rotation speed.
The traction relay is used to engage the drive pinion with the engine crankshaft flywheel ring gear and to turn on the power supply to the starter electric motor. When the ignition key is turned to the "starter" position, voltage is supplied to both windings of the traction relay via an additional relay of type 113.3747-10 (retracting and retaining). After the traction relay contacts are closed, the pull-in winding is switched off.
The response voltage of the traction relay should be no more than 9 V at (20±5)°C. If this is not the case, there is a fault in the relay or drive. The serviceability of the drive is determined by inspection after disassembling the starter. The faulty relay is replaced.
Some engines are equipped with a 5722.3708 starter – a four-pole, four-brush DC electric motor with excitation from permanent magnets, with a planetary gearbox, a freewheel roller clutch and a two-winding traction relay.

Four permanent magnets are glued to the steel housing of the starter, each additionally secured from the inside with a flared aluminum bushing. The housing and covers of the starter are pulled together with two studs. The armature shaft rotates in two metal-ceramic inserts installed in the cover and shaft support. Torque from the armature shaft is transmitted to the drive shaft through a planetary gearbox consisting of a central gear, three planetary gears, a carrier, and a gear with internal engagement (epicyclic).
